This event is suuuper HARD and intended for experienced cyclists. LOTS of gravel, LOTS of climbing, and BIG downhills on rough and rowdy forest service roads. This is a Gran Fondo ride, not a race, riders must obey all traffic laws.
What to expect:
An epic day on the bike, riding a well thought out, well marked course. A super cool HI90 Grindy souvenir, and well stocked aid stations to refuel at. Times of all finishers will be posted for bragging rights.
At 90 miles and 7900 of climbing, not only does this one have a lot of climbing, it has a lot of gravel, at 60 miles worth. The ride rolls out on Upper Peoh Point to Thorp, then on to the Palouse to Cascades gravel path (bring a headlight for the tunnels) for a nice gentle rolling warm up, but around the 41 mile mark the real climbing begins. Up FS3350 (formerly GFEburg downhill) which is a beautiful, winding gravel climb up to the top of So Cle Elum Ridge, then down the backside to Taneum junction, onto FS3300, where you will begin to stair step your way back up to the top of So Cle Elum Ridge, with massive views along the ridge in all directions. Check your brakes, the mega descent down 4510 (formerly GFEburg uphill) means business, fast and chucky, with breathtaking views to distract you. From there you hop back on to the Palouse to Cascades trail for a (well deserved) gentle grade back to the finish in So Cle Elum. Aid stations at mile 38.9, 51.5, and 72.3 View Course Map
We are referring to this one as a MEGA-Medio, as it has more climbing than the first few Grande rides of the series, not to mention 40 of the 53 miles are gravel. Yep, this one is has some kick to it! The party gets started at 5 miles in, climbing FS3350 (formerly GFEburg downhill) which is a beautiful, winding gravel climb up to the top of S Cle Elum Ridge, then down the backside to Taneum junction, onto FS3300, where you will begin to stair step your way back up to the top of So Cle Elum Ridge, with massive views along the ridge in all directions. Check you brakes, the mega descent down 4510 (formerly GFEburg uphill) means business, fast and chunky, with breathtaking views to distract you. From there you hop back on the Palouse to Cascades trail for a (well deserved) gentle grade back to the finish in So Cle Elum. Aid stations at mile 15, and 35.7 View Course Map
New to gravel and want to see what all the fuss is about? Or just prefer things a bit more chill? Then we've got your jam! A 25 mile roller with beautiful views, and just enough grindy to keep it real, featuring 1500' of climbing, and approx 8 miles of beginner friendly gravel. View Course Map
Rough and rowdy forest service roads with BIG climbs and BIG downhills call for a solid/sturdy bike that can take some chunder, hopefully be able to clear a 38-40mm tire, have gearing capable of grinding out some steep pitches, and have good brakes. You never know what the weather will do in the mountains, it will likely be hot, especially the lower elevations, but things can get weird up high, be prepared. Leg/arm warmers and a packable wind jacket can add a lot of versatility to your kit. Nutrition: most will throw a bar in their pocket, have a couple water bottles on the bike, and use the aid stations to refuel as needed. A hot day can drastically change how much water you need to consume/pack along with you. Know your needs, and plan accordingly.
Registration is limited, don't delay. Registration opens on Feb 1 and closes June 5. Sign up for the series to save money, get a sweet 6pack shirt, and be eligible for The GRIT List, a general classification of all grande finishers and their cumulative ranking across the series.
Up to 30 days out? No problemo. Less than 30 days? Ok, we’ll do a 50% refund. Two weeks out? Come on man, you’re killing the vibe, we’ve committed our efforts and resources already at this point, no refunds.
The HI90 Grindy is a challenging high mountain ride with just the mega climbs and rowdy descents you need to send you into summer proper.
